Co-op are better than many on the ethical front, largely due to a big campaign from members, but they're down to only 35 branches now.
so far, my experience with Nationwide has been very positive - the fact that they are owned by the members and not shareholders led to the unexpected £200 payout when they had a really good year. It wasn't why I joined, but it was very nice to have!
I've not had any hassle factors to date. (I left Barclays in the past when they totally screwed up some direct debits)
