Why do people advertise books before they are available?

In the magazine for the English Folk Dance and Song Society there were two books that I found interesting. One was a book of folk songs, the other was a book about the history of rapper sword dancing. Both are ones that I might like to get for Christmas. When I visit the EFDSS website, there is not yet an individual entry for the book because it has not yet been released. Thus, it's impossible to add it to my Amazon wish list – which means they're probably losing out on a sale, because my Amazon wish list is where I direct my relatives when they want to know what I want for Christmas.

If there's anything I hate, its websites ask you for unnecessary information. I wanted to buy an elbow brace for my tennis elbow, so I hunted around on Google and found one that looked ideal. I filled in the order form which demanded a password and both a home address and a delivery address. It promised free delivery if I signed up for their mailing list so I ticked the box for that, only to discover when I got to the checkout that this gave me a slower delivery option.

So I cancelled my order, sent them a snooty email and went and bought one off Amazon instead. It cost me the same amount on Amazon, but I didn't have to signup for a mailing list to get free delivery, and I don't get mucked about.

Amazon may be a big evil monopoly, but at least it's easy-to-use, I don't have to input loads of information every time, and it does what it says on the tin.
