Facebook

I've been playing around with Facebook, but am coming to the conclusion that I probably won't be using it all that much.

Most of the stuff there just reminds me of LJ memes and they're the aspect of LJ that I use least.

I can see myself using it to play Scrabble, but not a lot else at present.

Be aware that Facebook's fine print gives them the right to consolidate information about you they can find from any other source into the file they hold on you, and sell it to anyone they like.

Yuk.

I'm too stressed out to think much about that now, but it might be enough to make me depart later on.

There was a story (http://business.guardian.co.uk/story/0,,2162872,00.html) in all the newspapers yesterday about Facebook opening up member profiles to search engines, though it's possible to opt out.

Thanks for the warning. I've just been and opted out.

I signed up several months ago and I'm still not entirely convinced (mind you, I'm also still mildly sceptical about LJ). Things I have found it useful for are: reestablishing contact with friends I'd drifted out of touch with, and unobtrusively checking up on students who've gone awol (if they're still tagging each other in photographs, becoming vampires, ninjas, jedi, werewolves, zombies, or sending each other fish or aliens, then I know they're not dead or otherwise in serious trouble, they're just not doing enough work). Like LJ, there's a lot of timewasting nonsense on there (I too eschew the LJ fad for 'memes') but in important respects it's not LJ and I'm not sure it's entirely useful to compare them (as some people have done).

I still haven't worked out what Facebook is for. I should probably delete my account though, as Rotaract seem to be using it as an alternative to email at the moment, which I object to as it involves more effort on my part to check.

I use it primarily for playing Scrabble and catching up with friends WANOLJ.

I have obfuscated, or attempted to obfuscate, a lot of my profile.

It is not a replacement for LJ.

Mmm, I still prefer LJ over anything else but Facebook easily comes second for me.

What do you see as Facebook's advantages?

From my initial look it appears to be all quizes and memes and they tend to set of my wrist trouble for very little reward.

[identity profile] meltinthemist.livejournal.com 2007-09-11 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
Most of my friends by now use it, whichever country they may be from, which is very useful. I don't see it as comparable to LJ really but *highly* useful for things like sharing photos easily and makes them more manageable(tagging people in photos is a huge plus for me) as well as quickly contacting or letting many friends know things/vise versa.

I can see the advantage if you post a lot of photos. The tagging facility is a particularly good one. I seem to be one of those sad people who hardly ever take photos...

Which is why facebook is so good - everytime someone like me, who takes a ridiculous number of photos, takes a photo of you, you're even notified.
