A thought from Alex_Holden.

If I had two sensors with logging (My current one doesn't have a logger), then I could use one after the inverter and one in the usual position and get some really pretty graphs.

I can't currently justify spending £70 to get a pair, but I do like the idea of being able to see both generation and consumption.

3 AA batteries. They'll probably last a year or so.

Get rechargable ones and top them up every midsummer's day.

Surely the other end must be connected to something to read the electricity?

THey probably are rechargeables. I didn't look inside, but that's what we normally use.

It may use batteries at the other end, but I'm not sure where that part is attached.

The write-up says 6 AA batteries, so I suspect the other unit is similarly powered. There must be some use in order to transmit the information to the portable unit.

Yes, there are batteries in both parts. The transmitter is connected to a sensor that normally clips around one of the thick wires that goes into the meter.
