Leg pain

I'm hoping someone on my flist will have a suggestion that may help as this pain has been ongoing for weeks now.

I had very bad chest around the Xmas/New Year period and had to pretty much give up any kind of exercise as even walking made me feel as though I was being shot in the chest.

That's gone now, I finally found a way of dealing with it (vicious massage of what was clearly a pulled muscle of some kind)

The hard part has been getting fit again from an almost zero baseline.  I've now got pretty much back to normal again, I can swim fast, do my normal gym workout (though it still leave me wiped), morris dance and walk for a couple of hours.

The real problem is that I can manage the exercise without pain, but about 5 mins after I stop, I get severe pain in my left thigh.  The pain can last a whole day and nothing seems to stop it.  Stretching helps a little, but only a little.  If I go through my warm up routine, the pain will reduce for a few minutes, but then it comes back again.

After a day with no exercise the pain will have reduced, but I don't want to become immobile again!

Can anyone suggest (the doctor had no ideas) why it doesn't hurt until I stop exercising?

Cold makes it even worse, but heat doesn' t make a lot of difference (tried hot water bottles)

Working on the computer is really difficult, because the leg gets really painful after a few minutes stilling down.

I'd really like this pain to be gone by Redemption, or I won't be able to sit down for any programme items!

Help !  All advice welcome.

Find a good physiotherapist; they may have a better idea than your doctor.

Seconded. In my experience physios know much more than GPs about muscles and joints, what goes wrong with them and ways to fix them.

I did say a good physiotherapist. 8-)

The difficulty is finding one. I'm lucky: Mum was very good at finding excellent medical practitioners - including the physio whom we all use/used.

I'd go running to my chiropractor. Probably for several sessions. I'd also ease off for a week or so (Yep, I'd tell myself to do this; no predictions necessary for compliance). No sense in continuing to irritate a really annoyed bit of muscle. One time I injured my arm (overusing the chainsaw). It took 9 months to resolve. I found that self massage was very effective.

Well, a good tool is a good tool!

Hope it heals up soon, That kind of injury is SO annoying.

Can you ride a bike?

I know, it's my answer to everything; but it is very low-impact compared to, say, morris dancing.

Things that might help....tiger balm and/or using a leg massager. It could be tight muscles.

Massage does help a bit, but the effects are short lived.

Have you had any lower back problems recently? It could be it's something like eg sciatica or a trapped nerve causing symptoms elsewwhere.

Thats my thought. I get similar pains at times.

I don't think so. I've had the kind of referred pain in the past in my little finger and this is very different.

It's an ache over a large area - worse in some places than others rather then a shooting pain in a single place.

Thats how my leg feels sometimes and I know it's linked to the permenant damage to my lower back. Having my leg elevated where possible combined with the sort of flexing I use for a cramp seems to sort it out.

Can't help with suggestions but it sounds like my problem in my right leg, that is if your pain is in the front of your thigh. My foot slipped off an icy step, during the snow, going up and severely over stretched the muscle or tendon at the front. Nothing I do will stop the pain but the co-codemol, not something I like to take but enough was enough I get from the doctor does decrease it. It is slowly getting better and I am not letting it stop me from doing every thing I usually do

I've been trying that at the gym and I think it does help a bit.
