Dancing Horses

Folk traditions throw up some wonderful animals on occasion. There are traditional hobby horses - not the children's toy, but proper hobby horses, like Dobbin below.  they sometimes join in morris dances

and a jig dancing horse from the Outside Capering Crew

and if you like that one, then you need the sequel...

I'll maybe cover hooden horses another day

The skill, coordination and strength that goes into creating a performance like that of the Outside Capering Crew horse! Makes my back ache just thinking about the rear legs in particular though........

I came across her in Susan Cooper's "Silver on the Tree", where the two boys are hunted into paroxyms of terror by a beribboned skeletal horse; Bran explains afterwards, shamefaced, that he was frightened by the Mari Llywd as a small child, and the nightmare was brought to life from his imagination.
After seeing toddlers run screaming from Father Christmas, I can well imagine that a snapping horse's skull might have an adverse effect on the sensitive!
